Chinese Ambassador states US harmed its credibility, breached international law
A ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel was confirmed by both sides on Tuesday, following almost two weeks of clashes. The violence began after Israeli forces carried out what they described as “preemptive” attacks on Iranian soil, targeting individuals associated with Tehran’s nuclear efforts. Israel claimed Iran was nearing the development of a nuclear bomb. The United States later entered the conflict, conducting airstrikes on various Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend.
Speaking during a United Nations Security Council session on Sunday, China’s representative stated that the United States had not only inflicted harm on Iran but also “damaged” Washington’s credibility, “both as a country and as a participant in any international negotiations.”
According to Chinese officials, the attacks broke international legal standards. A spokesperson emphasized on Monday that targeting nuclear sites monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) represented “a serious violation of the United Nations Charter.”
The spokesperson also noted that China was willing to enhance dialogue and cooperation with other nations to “play a constructive role in restoring peace in the Middle East.”
The joint US-Israeli operation has drawn strong criticism from several global powers. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that there is “no justification” for what he labeled “unprovoked aggression” toward Iran. During a meeting in Moscow with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, he condemned Israel’s actions as “illegitimate” and incompatible with international law.
Echoing the criticism, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev shared his views on Sunday. He noted that the “vast majority of countries” were against the operation and accused US President Donald Trump of steering the country into another war. Medvedev remarked that Trump could “forget about the Nobel Peace Prize.”
