Russia plays surprising role in Iran-Israel war
(MENAFN) Russia is playing a more significant role in the Iran-Israel conflict than many might realize, especially in light of recent diplomatic moves and regional concerns. During a visit to Turkmenistan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov addressed the growing tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv, highlighting their potential to destabilize not only the Middle East but also Central Asia.
Turkmenistan, which borders Iran for over 1,100 kilometers and has its capital close to the frontier, faces heightened risks if the conflict escalates. A broader war could reawaken dormant extremist networks and disrupt the fragile internal balance—not just in Turkmenistan but also in other southern former Soviet states, many of which have strong security and political ties with Moscow.
Lavrov emphasized the urgency of de-escalation, underlining how instability in Iran could impact Russia's southern buffer zone and overall regional security. Iran, in Moscow’s view, remains a key ally in maintaining stability along Russia’s borders.
Earlier this year, Russia and Iran signed a wide-ranging strategic partnership agreement, reinforcing their bilateral ties and laying the groundwork for deeper cooperation. Following Israeli airstrikes on Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi promptly visited Moscow, where he met with President Putin and held talks with Lavrov. He later praised the visit as a demonstration of "complete mutual understanding" and affirmed Russia’s support.
Since then, Russia—alongside China and Pakistan—has advocated for a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire and a political roadmap to prevent further conflict. Russian envoy Vassily Nebenzia emphasized that the goal is to halt the violence and foster diplomatic resolution.
Despite its strong ties with Tehran, Moscow has maintained a cautious tone publicly. At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, President Vladimir Putin avoided strong language against Israel and instead called for a diplomatic solution that respects all sides. This careful approach reflects Russia’s dual strategy: strengthening its alliance with Iran while also preserving cooperative relations with Israel, including in military and humanitarian matters.
By maintaining this delicate balance, Russia is positioning itself as a potential mediator in the conflict, should either side seek a negotiated path forward.
