US, Russian Lawmakers Renew Contacts
The meeting took place on Thursday after Luna invited a group of Russian parliamentarians, led by Vyacheslav Nikonov, a senior figure in the International Affairs Committee. The delegation met with a bipartisan group of US lawmakers at the Donald Trump Institute of Peace in Washington.
“As representatives of the world’s two greatest nuclear super powers, we owe our citizens open dialogue, ideas, and open lines of communication,” Luna said in a message shared on X after the talks, noting that discussions focused on “peace and bilateral relations.”
According to the head of the Russian delegation, the outcome of the meeting exceeded expectations, describing it as going “better than expected” and suggesting that reestablishing communication between the legislative bodies of both countries is now “possible.” Another participant, State Duma vice speaker Boris Chernyshov, characterized the exchange as “an open and honest dialogue.” He added that “a large number of issues” were addressed and described the overall outcome as “good.”
Officials in Moscow also reacted positively to the development, describing the meeting as a “necessary” and “very important” move. According to statements, there is hope that such interactions could help restore a key channel of communication between the two countries that has been “totally frozen” in recent years. It was further noted that reviving this dialogue would be “in the interests of both Moscow and Washington.”
