Russia-Ukraine 32-Hour Truce Concludes
The truce, which had taken effect at 4 p.m. Moscow time (1300 GMT), barely held before Moscow and Kyiv each reported over a thousand drone and artillery strikes within hours of its start.
The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that it had logged 1,971 ceasefire breaches attributed to Ukrainian forces overnight Sunday. Ukraine's General Staff countered with a far higher figure, stating it had recorded 7,696 violations from the truce's outset through 10 p.m. (1900 GMT) Sunday.
With the conflict now in its fifth year since escalating in February, independently verifying either side's claims remains largely impossible.
The short-lived pause was initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who announced it Thursday and directed military commanders to prepare for its rollout — while cautioning that any Ukrainian provocation would draw a response from Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signaled his country's participation just hours before the ceasefire took hold, pledging that Kyiv would join the initiative and act "in a mirror manner."
The collapse of the Easter truce deals a fresh blow to prospects for any sustained halt to hostilities in the grinding conflict.
