Rubio Says Putin May Attend G20 Summit in Miami

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin could participate in the upcoming Group of Twenty (G20) summit in Miami, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday, while noting that Washington has yet to receive official confirmation of his attendance.

“There’s the potential that Putin might come to the one in Miami as well, although we don’t have confirmation on that,” Rubio told reporters during a visit to India.

His remarks came in response to questions about Russia's representation at the Miami summit and a separate G20 foreign ministers' gathering scheduled to take place in Atlanta.

Rubio explained that Russia had been invited to participate in the G20 following a decision by the US president, adding that Moscow would therefore be represented at both meetings.

"Well, the Russians are invited to be a part of the G20, the president made that decision. So obviously they're going to be represented at each of these summits."

When asked whether Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov would personally attend the Atlanta meeting, Rubio said he had not received definitive information but believed the minister might take part.

"I don't know if he himself is coming. I expect he might. I think he told us he was in the last time we engaged with him. So they're part of the G20, and so they'll be at that meeting," Rubio said.
